This day trip to Lovcen National Park starts at Kotor, Budva, or Tivat at about 8:00 AM. After a short drive, be amazed at the old road built in 1879 by the Austro-Hungarians to connect Kotor and Cetinje, the former royal capital. It’s got 25 curves and there are going to be a few stops for you to take pictures and enjoy the beauty of Boka Bay.
Enjoy breakfast in the village of Njegusi, best known as the birthplace of the Petrovic family, which ruled Montenegro from 1696 to 1918. The mausoleum sits at the top of a 461-step rise. The most impressive part of the mausoleum is the 6-sided chapel and the magnificent ceiling lined with over 200,000 gilded tiles, making a stunning mosaic.
Then take a 1-hour walking tour of Cetinje, exploring its key attractions, such as the monastery of Cetinje, where several relics are housed, including the ashes of St. Peter of Cetinje, the fragments of the True Cross, and the Symbol of the Mother of God of Philermos, along with many others. Discover the galleries, the Royal Theatre, the ancient foreign embassies, and the Vlaska Cathedral, built in 1450, with its wall consisting of barrels of captured enemy weapons.
The next destination is the River Crnojevica, a small historic town in central Montenegro on an ancient path through the countryside. It’s worth visiting both the lake and the ancient ruins left from the days of the merchants. Your lunch break is here, and don’t wait to try the local shrimp. Enjoy a 1-hour boat ride along the coast. Next, before returning to Kotor, see Sveti Stefan. And that will be the end of your day trip to Lovcen National Park.
